One of the challenges that a girl group will face in their career is widening their scope and trying to be more versatile. Not a lot of girl groups were successful in doing some changes. There were groups who were so famous for carrying cute concepts but people did not support them when they tried doing a sexier and more mature concept. The same goes for those who debuted as sexy girl groups and tried to tone it down a bit.
APink may have had a challenge during the first time they tried to shift from being a group that has a teeny-bopper concept to a more mature one, that did not stop them from trying again. Now, people have welcomed them and supported them even when their songs are geared toward a more mature audience.
APink is a six-member girl group under Plan A Entertainment. They made their debut on April 19, 2011, with the song “I Don’t Know”. Newer fans would not know this but APink actually started out with seven members. This is why their debut mini-album is entitled “Seven Springs of APink”.
APink Members’ Profile
Name: Park Chorong
Birthday: March 3, 1991
Position: Leader, Rapper, Sub Vocalist, Dancer
Chorong is the eldest member of APink and has become their leader ever since. Before being a trainee in A Cube Entertainment, she tried her hands at being a JYP trainee in 2009 alongside Sistar’sDasom. Many fans know that Chorong’sbest friend is BTOB’s Changsub.
However, I’d like to believe that a small romance is starting to blossom between the two. I don’t know, I like seeing them together and they seem to know each other very well that it wouldn’t be that hard for them to start a relationship. Well, all I can do is hope and wish.
Name: Yoon Bomi
Birthday: August 13, 1993
Position: Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist, Rapper
Bomi is born in Suwon, South Korea. Ever since I saw her in one of her guest appearances in Running Man and in Weekly Idol, I immediately knew that she’s the group’s official mood maker. Her variety skills are just so awesome and when she is in a show with others, you will be guaranteed to laugh.
She has appeared in MBC’s We Got Married and was virtually married to actor Choi Taejoon. There, she showed more of her charms.
Name: Jung Eunji
Birthday: August 18, 1993
Position: Main Vocalist, Face of the Group
Eunji is the first member of APink that I technically saw. But back then, I actually did not know she was a girl group member. I watched a drama called “Reply 1997” because of Infinite’s Hoya and she happened to be the lead actress. Her role is a tomboy who is extremely in love with H.O.T during the 90’s.
The way she acted made me think that she’s an actress. Imagine my surprise when I found out that she’s a member of a girl group who did cute concepts! Because of her versatility and because she is the first member I got to know, Eunji has been my bias ever since.
Name: Son Naeun
Birthday: February 10, 1994
Position: Lead Dancer, Sub Vocalist, Center, Visual
Naeun is the group’s visual. She’s pretty and out of all the members of APink, I think she has the most number of individual gigs in commercials and endorsements. Recently, she tried her hands at acting. She was okay but there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Besides her pretty face, Naeun’s variety skills are up to par with those idols considered as variety veterans. She made me laugh whenever she made a guest appearance on Running Man and teases Yang Sechan’s feelings.
Name: Kim Namjoo
Birthday: April 15, 1995
Position: Lead Vocalist, Lead Dancer, Rapper
Namjoo has recently been the talk of the town because of the recent plastic surgery she underwent. Namjoo’s talent is unrivaled and I honestly don’t understand why other people are bashing her just because she got under the knife.
I personally don’t see anything wrong with it. If it makes a person feel more confident and happier, then why should other people care about it? I salute Namjoo for being brave through it all. Haters are just going to hate but she will become more fabulous.
Name: Oh Hayoung
Birthday: July 19, 1996
Position: Vocalist, Rapper, Maknae
Hayoung is the group’s maknae. In terms of individual appearances, she hasn’t been that active until recently. In her recent appearances, she showed that she can also become funny when she wants to. Hayoung is my bias wrecker. I am part of a dance cover group and APink is one of the groups that we cover.
I take the role of Hayoung and for me to do justice in covering her parts, I had to study her mannerisms closely. This has made me research a lot about her and ultimately, I found that she has a nice personality.
APink hit it off with Album and Songs
APink’s career is as vibrant as the color that they represent. From their debut single to their latest song called “EungEung”, they have always garnered attention not just from male fans but from female fans as well.
Before their debut, the members were slowly introduced to the public in various ways. Naeun and Chorong were the first ones to be announced by appearing in Beast’s music videos. Hayoung was then announced next.
Eunji was the fourth member to be announced through the company’s official Twitter account with a video of her singing Jennifer Hudson’s “Love You I Do”. The remaining members, Bomi and Namjoo were introduced through the group’s reality show, APink News.
The group debuted in the perfect timing. They won their first music show award through the song “My My” just a little under a year after their debut. In the same year, they won “Rookie of the Year” and performed in an overseas music fest.
Their breakthrough came when they released “NoNoNo”. It was the group’s highest charting single to date. It even reached the #2 spot on Billboard’s KPOP Hot 100. However, while I like “NoNoNo”, I actually have a different favorite song from APink.
My favorite APink song
It was a special digital release called “Good Morning Baby”. I think I’m not the only fan who feels refreshed and energized when I hear this song in the morning. It’s the perfect picker-upper every single day. I could imagine a hearty breakfast and a relaxing stroll along the peaceful morning street with a cup of coffee in hand.
Starting in 2016 with the release of their “Pink Revolution” album, the group started to shift to a more mature type and style of music. Many people were a little taken aback by this sudden change but most of the fans were satisfied that finally, APink decided to let their music grow along with them.
APink might already be in the industry for a very long time but I think there is so much more that the group can show their fans. Their growth as artists has just begun and it looks like they are very excited to experiment more. Here’s to wishing APink a lot of good luck with their blossoming career!
