B.A.P did not have it easy navigating through the KPOP industry through the years. They may have entered the scene with a strong impact but they were faced with hardships and challenges along the way.
B.A.P is a six-member boy band formed under TS Entertainment. They debuted in 2012 and was just one of the many hopeful rookies at that time wishing to make it big. They debuted with the song “Warrior” on January 26, 2012. When they debuted, they showed a unique concept because they were the only idol group at the time to sport blonde hair for all members. Aside from that, their debut song was also characterized for its very aggressive musical style.
The group is composed of Yongguk, Himchan, Daehyun, Youngjae, Jongup, and Zelo. For a long time, they stayed consistent with their aggressive and rebellious style and concept. Their succeeding songs like “Badman”, “One Shot”, “Power”, and “No Mercy” were all characterized by their masculinity. However, the boys were not afraid to experiment too. Here and there, they released songs that were different from their rebellious style. Songs like “Stop It” and “Crash” were not really aggressive songs but they were still well-loved by the fans.
In 2014, the entire group decided to file a lawsuit against their company to nullify their contract. They claimed that there was an unfair profit distribution and the working conditions were not balanced. They further said that of the estimated US$9 million that the group has earned since their debut, they were just paid US$18,000 per member. There were many discussions and the case lasted for almost a year.
In 2015, the group and their company finally reached a settlement and they are finally gearing for a comeback. At this point, the boys have become more mature. Gone are the rebellious teenagers. They were replaced with classy, but still aggressive men. They released their eighth EP entitled “Matrix” with the title track “Young, Wild & Free”. Personally, this is my favorite song. I just felt like this is the song that marked the group’s rebirth. It still has the flavor of the music they once did before but it is now mixed with a new kind of style, showing the boys’ maturity and growth.
The group continued to release singles and albums. However, toward the end of 2016, Yongguk announced that he will be taking a hiatus because of health issues. Yongguk has been dealing with anxiety disorders for quite a time and he wanted to focus on fixing it. It was in 2017 that Yongguk rejoined the group for the promotions of their sixth single album entitled “Rose”. The carrier single of the album is called “Wake Me Up” and it addresses social issues, particularly, mental health.
On August 19, 2018, Yongguk’s contract with TS Entertainment has expired and he chose to leave the company. Zelo, whose contract ended on December 2 of the same year, followed too. And just recently, on February 18, 2019, the contracts of the remaining four members also expired and they all decided to leave the company for good. When asked about their decision, Jongup explained while they are all not with TS Entertainment anymore, B.A.P has not disbanded. Instead, the members will just be focusing on their solo promotions as of the moment.
Name: Kim Himchan
Birthday: April 19, 1990
Position: Sub-Vocal, Rapper, Visual
Himchan is known as a very close friend to Yongguk. I personally ship the two and I’d like to call their OTP, “BangHim”. It may not sound that conservative but the two would make a hot couple, don’t you think? Aside from Yongguk, Himchan is also close to Seventeen’s Woozi and Wonwoo and JBJ’s Hyunbin. This is pretty much the reason why he is my bias. He is very down to earth and he’s very friendly, even to his junior artists.
Name: Jung Daehyun
Birthday: June 28, 1993
Position: Main Vocalist, Face of the Group
There is no question that Daehyun has one of the most amazing voices in KPOP. For a guy, he has a really wide vocal range and can effortlessly hit high notes. His voice is pretty much what keeps me listening to their songs. Everytime he belts out those high notes, it just feels so heavenly. I personally liked the special song he and Yongguk performed called “I Remember”. I could faintly remember trying to imitate Daehyun’s voice complete with his emotions. I think I failed because Daehyun is the only one capable of producing such sound.
Name: Yoo Youngjae
Birthday: January 24, 1994
Position: Lead Vocalist
Before becoming a member of B.A.P, he was a trainee for four years. He was training under JYP for about a year and he decided to transfer to TS because he felt like he would not debut soon enough if he stayed in YG. In a radio interview, he revealed that he likes to play online games a lot. He even has a gaming crew that he leads with BTS’s Jin, BtoB’sEunkwang, and VIXX’s Ken as the members.
Name: Moon Jongup
Birthday: February 6, 1995
Position: Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist
Up until now, I’m still surprised that no one has pointed out how Jongup looks a lot like Sistar’s Bora. It might just be me. But, can’t you really see the resemblance? They’re both extremely good dancers too! During his free time,Jongup likes watching the anime “Attack on Titans”. So, if you wish to date him, make sure you also make yourself a fan of anime because that is what he likes in a girl.
Name: Bang Yongguk
Birthday: March 31, 1990
Position: Main Rapper, Leader
It may not be that obvious but Yongguk is actually a fan of telenovelas or Latin dramas. He said that he watches them because he is learning Spanish. His other hobbies include exercising, writing song lyrics, and composing songs. He also likes to enjoy alone time a lot.
Name: Choi Junhong
Birthday: October 15, 1996
Position: Lead Rapper, Lead Dancer, Maknae
Zelo attended the same academy as BTS’s J-Hope in Gwangju for rap and dance and that’s where they got close. He is also close to Seventeen’s Hoshi. Zelo has this weird obsession of wanting his fans to call him “oppa” even though some of them are older than him.
The future holds no assurance for B.A.P. We might be seeing them back together again like nothing happened. Or, they may be promoting again under a different name. But for sure, their fans will always be behind them to support and cheer for them.
