BlackPink Ultimate Fan Guide

YG Entertainment has always been known for being so good at training their artists to become very good in performing with charisma and strong personalities. If you think about YG artists like 2NE1, Big Bang, and iKON, you will notice that they all have something in common.

This trait is also present in YG’s latest girl group: BlackPink.

BlackPink is a female quartet formed under YG Entertainment who debuted on August 8, 2016, and is composed of members Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rose.

BlackPink Members’ Profiles

Name: Kim Jisoo

Birthday: January 3, 1995

Position: Lead Vocalist, Visual

Jisoo is the third member of the group that was revealed when YG started releasing teasers for the group. Prior to debut, she was already training under YG for five years. She knows how to speak Korean, Japanese, and basic Chinese.

According to Jennie, Jisoo does not speak English because she is embarrassed to do it. However, she can understand English very well. Jisoo is not only a singer and a dancer. She can also play musical instruments such as the drums and the piano. She is also known to be close with Twice’sNayeon and Red Velvet’s Seulgi.

Name: Kim Jennie

Birthday: January 16, 1996

Position: Main Rapper, Vocalist

Jennie was the very first member of the group that was revealed in public. This is why I think she has become the face of the group. She has trained longer than Jisoo for almost six years. She can also play other musical instruments such as the piano and the flute.

Her close friends include Twice’sNayeon, Red Velvet’s Irene, and GFriend’sYerin. Before she was confirmed to be a part of BlackPink she already appeared in public with collaborations with other YG artists like Lee Hi, G-Dragon, and Seungri.

Name: Park Chaeyoung

Birthday: February 11, 1997

Position: Main Vocalist, Lead Dancer

Rose is the last member of the group to be revealed. Many fans know that Rose did not really stay that long in Korea. While her parents are both Korean, she was actually born in Auckland, New Zealand. Later on, their family transferred to Melbourne, Australia and this is where she spent most of her childhood years in.

While in Australia and before auditioning for YG, Rose was part of the cheerleading team in her school. Rose became a trainee in 2012 where she placed first in the Australian leg of the YG Auditions. This made her the member with the shortest training period before debuting. Loyal fans will recognize her for collaborating with G-Dragon in his song “Without You” even when she was featured anonymously.

Name: Lalisa Manoban

Birthday: March 27, 1997

Position: Main Dancer, Lead Rapper, Sub-Vocalist, Maknae

Lisa is one of the growing Thai population in the KPOP industry. She was born and raised in Thailand and was the only person accepted to YG in the Thailand leg of the YG Audition. If you think that Lisa and GOT7’s Bambam are close because they are both Thai then you are right.

But, the two of them are actually close and are childhood friends because they are both members of the dance crew We Zaa Cool. When she became a trainee and moved to Korea, she did not know how to speak Korean and she had to learn it alongside her training sessions. Lisa is my bias mainly because she really dances so well.

One memorable thing that I remember is the group’s guesting in “Idol Room”. She was challenged to learn other girl groups choreography by just watching the choreography video. Everyone was so surprised that she perfectly danced to Twice and Red Velvet’s songs after watching the choreography video just once!

A Quick Beginner’s Guide

Fandom Name

The attention on BlackPink is slowly growing because of the confirmation that the group will be performing in the upcoming Coachella festival. They will be the very first all-female KPOP act that will be performing in the said festival and to the girls, this is a very big achievement. This is also why more and more people are starting to get to know them.

In KPOP, loyal fans are called a certain name by the idols. Other groups like BTS has fans called ARMYs, MONSTA X has fans called Monbebe, and SEVENTEEN calls their fans as Carat. BlackPink also has a term of endearment to their fans. So, if you have decided to fully support BlackPink, you can now call yourself a Blink.

If you are a beginner and looking for that one song that you can start listening to, you have many choices. All of BlackPink’s songs are so addictive and they all induce LSS (last song syndrome). But, if I have to suggest one song for you to start, it would be their latest release called “Ddu Du Ddu Du”.

Just a warning, if you ever decide to listen to this song, you may not want to listen to other songs for a while. While the whole song is full of rap verses that may be hard to follow for Non-Korean speaking fans, its beat seems like it moves around your head. In no time, you’ll be walking through the entrance of your office or school while singing, “hit you with that ddu du ddu du du!”

Another song that I would like to suggest is “Forever Young” This is the b-side track of “Ddu Du Ddu Du”. So far, “Forever Young” does not have a music video just yet but the group has already performed it in music shows. I personally like this song because of its heavy EDM influence.

In my younger years, I used to go to rave parties and I have always loved listening to EDM tunes with really deep and meaningful lyrics. The lyrics to Forever Young is very relatable and I just can’t stop myself from singing, “I could die in this moment… forever young!”

So far, the group has just released four title tracks since they debuted. There are still a lot of things in store for them in the future. With how YG is handling them, I’m sure that the group will give their fans a lot of surprises in the near future.
