When we talk about KPOP, we almost always automatically equate it with idol groups. However, idol groups are not the only ones that make up this fun and exciting genre. There are also rock bands that have transcended to be called as KPOP groups. One of them is the rising band from JYP Entertainment, DAY6.
DAY6 is a South Korean rock boy band formed under JYP Entertainment in 2015. The band is currently composed of five members: Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon. The members of the band first appeared in an episode on the survival reality show “Who Is Next: WIN” in 2014. Back then, the band was called 5LIVE with the original members Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Junhyeok. In the middle of 2015, Dowoon, who will be the band’s drummer, was added and the group was renamed DAY6.
The band debuted on September 7, 2015 with their debut mini-album called “The Day” with the lead single “Congratulations” as a six-member band.
However, in early of 2016, Junhyeok left the group due to personal reasons and he decided to terminate his contract with the company. The band continued with five members and released their second mini-album called “Daydream” with the title track “Letting Go”. The band did not officially say this but I think this song is strongly connected to the departure of one member. Compared to their debut single “Congratulations”, which was more about the anger felt by someone after a breakup, “Letting Go” was more about the sad realization that the only thing left to do is to let go and move on.
In 2017, the band announced that they will have a monthly project titled Every DAY6. At the sixth of each month, the band will release two songs, one being the lead single that they will be promoting on music shows. In June 2017, DAY6 released their first full-length album entitled “Sunrise” which consists of all the songs they released from January to May along with two new tracks that will serve as their June release for Every DAY6. This was also the time that they announced the official name of their fandom which is “My Day”.
In July 2017, the band went back to releasing songs for Every DAY6 and on December, they released their second full-length album called “Moonrise” that consists of their release from July to November with two new additional songs for December.
In 2018, the band released two new mini-albums that were part of a series. The albums were respectively named “Shoot Me: Youth Part 1” and “Remember Us: Youth Part 2”.
With all the songs that the band has released ever since, there is one particular song that I could say is my most favorite song. It’s called “Colors” which is a side track on their debut album. It is a song that is all about a person who feels like his or her life is dull and colorless and he or she longs for that special someone who can bring colors to his or her life. It’s a very sad song and I don’t know, when I heard it, it just pulled up all the emotions inside me. Up until now, I have never grown tired of the song and there are days that I just set it on repeat all day.
I’m sure it’s not the band’s intention but I think they are really good at performing heartbreak songs. All their songs that are about heartaches are just so painful. Listening to it even if you’re not understanding it just feels sad and you continue to bawl when you start reading the lyrics in English. DAY6 is also good at performing fun and upbeat songs but I personally would like to see more of their “emo” side because it just shoots right through the heart.
Name: Park Sungjin
Birthday: January 16, 1993
Position: Leader, Main Vocalist, Rhythm Guitarist
The band’s leader is charming and multi-talented. He also moonlights as the band’s songwriter. Sometimes, fans would notice how he moves and performs like an idol because of the way he dances, sings, and even behaves on stage. But of course, people always see that rocker persona when he performs. He also doesn’t mind taking care of his members and cleaning up after their mess. After all, he’s the leader and it’s one of the qualities that a good leader should have.
Name: Park Jaehyung
Birthday: September 15, 1992
Position: Lead Guitarist, Lead Vocalist, Rapper, Face of the Group
Jae was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina but his family moved to California when he was still 5 years old. At a young age, Jae already displayed promising talent in music. He started learning how to play the guitar and this led him to upload song covers on his personal YouTube channel. His channel was one of the things that led to his discovery and recruitment and the rest was history. Jae has always been my favorite member. His personality is just so fun and vibrant that I just want to befriend him. He’s also cute. His most famous nickname is “Chicken Little” because he looks a lot like the cartoon character.
Name: Kang Younghyun
Birthday: December 19, 1993
Position: Main Rapper, Lead Vocalist, Bassist
Many fans know that Young K is from Toronto, Canada. However, he was actually born and raised in Ilsan, South Korea before transferring to Toronto. Prior to debut, Young K appeared in Dream High 1 and 2 as a backup dancer. Now, I really wonder why he did not debut as an idol. His love for music and musical instruments must be so strong that he wanted to pursue a career as a rock band member.
Name: Kim Wonpil
Birthday: April 28, 1994
Position: Lead Vocalist, Keyboardist, Synthesizer, Visual
Wonpil is considered as the blacksheep of the group but not because he’s a bad person. He just likes to tease his members and he’s very playful. Wonpil is very laidback and he’s confident with his musical skills. His hobbies also include things that make use of his hands like playing the synthesizer, keyboard, and the MIDI platform. He also likes to create figurines and models out of plastic.
Name: Yoon Dowoon
Birthday: August 25, 1995
Position: Drummer, Maknae
Dowoon has this very surprising visual. You would not really notice him that much on stage because he’s mostly sitting down playing the drums but on variety shows, he’s very noticeable because of his tall height and deep voice. Dowoon is also rather shy in public but when he befriends someone, he starts to become very talkative.
