F(x) Ultimate Fan Guide

SM Entertainment has always been so known with their visual idols. Every group that debuted under their company always have, if not all, some members that are strikingly visually appealing. When F(x) debuted, people couldn’t quite put their finger on what set this group apart.

They are still visually appealing but they have this certain flavor that feels new to KPOP fans back in the days. F(x) is a South Korean girl group formed under SM Entertainment. Originally, they debuted as a five-member girl group consisting of Victoria, Amber, Luna, Krystal, and Sulli. However, in August 2015, Sulli left the group to focus on her acting career.

The group was introduced as a girl group that will be more focused on dancing as opposed to their seniors, SNSD, who are more focused on their vocals. The debuted with the song “La Cha Ta” on September 1, 2009. They had their first live performance on MBC’s Music Core. Shortly after debuting, the group already scored their first endorsement as a group with LG, promoting the LG Chocolate phones alongside SNSD. They released the single “chocolate Love” for this promotion.

On November 9, 2009, the group released their first physical single called “Chu” with the carrier single of the same name. In early 2010, the group had another promotional stint for LG with a collaboration with a Chinese boy band called M.I.C. to promote the LG Cyon phones, releasing a single called “Lollipop”.

On May 4, 2010, the group released their first mini-album called “Nu ABO” with the title track of the same name. Personally, this has been my favorite F(x) song so far. When I was younger, I used to play an online rhythm and hand-eye coordination game where players press keyboard keys in time with a song that is playing. The game mostly had KPOP songs and one of the hardest songs to play was “Nu ABO”. I think I went on for two weeks trying to play the song before I perfected it. And, you already know what happens when you repeatedly listen to a song.

Another reason why I like this song is because of its aggressive but clean music style. It was a little uncommon to hear from a girl group but they pulled off a very heavy electropop song nicely.

On June 14, 2011, the group released a repackaged album of their first full-length album “Pinocchio” and it featured the song “Hot Summer” as a title track. It would then become one of the group’s most celebrated song. It peaked at #2 on the Gaon digital single chart and was downloaded over 375,000 times in just a week of release. However, not many people know that “Hot Summer” is actually a remake of a German song from a band called Monrose.

The group continued releasing hit albums. On August 2015, it was announced that Sulli will leave the group to focus on her acting career and F(x) will continue with four members. In October of that same year, the group released their fourth full-length album called “4 Walls”. On July 22, 2016, the group released a single called “All Mine” through the SM Station project. This would be the group’s last release before going on a prolonged hiatus. The members have been active individually though.

Name: Song Qian

Birthday: February 2, 1987

Position: Leader, Main Dancer, Vocalist, Rapper

Victoria was born in Qingdao, Shandong, China. She was discovered through a Beijing dance competition in September 2007 and has trained with SM Entertainment since then. In 2010, a little over a year after their debut, she appeared in the variety show “We Got Married” where she was virtually married to 2PM’s Nichkhun. Victoria loves dancing and her specialties include the traditional and jazz dances. She is best known for her flexibility and she would proudly show it whenever she appears on variety and reality shows. Victoria has also tried her hands at acting. She starred in a Chinese fantasy drama entitled “Ice Fantasy” together with the famous Chinese celebrity, Feng Shao Feng.

Name: Amber Josephine Liu

Birthday: September 18, 1992

Position: Main Rapper, Vocalist

Although Amber’s roots are Chinese, she was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, United States. She was cast through the SM Global Auditions in Los Angeles in 2007. In that audition, she sang MC The Max’s “Oh Heart, Please Stop Now” and K.Will’s “Left Heart”. Amber is best known for her boyish aura. Unlike other girl groups, she does not really wear feminine clothes and prefers boyish clothes. This might be because she was exposed to the urban style of rapping when she was still young. However, Amber has one of the most surprising and sweetest voices I’ve ever heard. I was so dumbstruck when they released their song “Goodbye Summer” and there was a voice I couldn’t recognize. Later on, I found out that it was actually Amber singing! This is one of the reasons why she is my bias. She has a really fun personality and she gives off that very friendly and laid back vibe.

Name: Park Sunyoung

Birthday: August 12, 1993

Position: Main Vocalist, Lead Dancer

Among the current members of the group, she’s the only one that is born in South Korea. True F(x) fans would know that Luna actually has a twin brother that is older than her by a few minutes. She was scouted by SM Entertainment after her appearance on the reality TV show called “Truth Game”. Luna is the main vocalist for a reason. She has one of the most beautiful voices in KPOP even until today. One of the most striking and memorable performances of Luna was in King of Masked Singer. She joined the show and sang Ra.D’s “Eomma” but arranged it into a ballad with a very emotional feel. I think that was one of the few times that I actually cried while listening to a song that I could not even understand.

Name: Krystal Jung

Birthday: October 24, 1994

Position: Lead Vocalist, Visual, Face of the Group, Maknae

Krystal was born in San Francisco, California, United States. Everyone knows that Krystal is the younger sister of the former SNSD member, Jessica. Krystal is the first member of F(x) to enter SM Entertainment as a trainee. She was recruited way back in 2000 along with Jessica when they had a family visit in Korea. Aside from being an idol, Krystal also had a very successful acting career. She appeared in many dramas such as “Cutie Pie”, “High Kick! 3”, “The Heirs”, “My Lovely Girl”, and “Bride of the Water God”.
