KPOP used to be so simple and easy to follow back in the days. Usually, it would involve a group of girls or boys debuting in an idol group under a particular agency. When their contract expires, they either choose to renew it and continue as a group or they can choose to disband and focus on their solo activities.
But, whether we like it or not, the industry is still a business and the idols are still humans who can make their own decisions. This is what happened to HIGHLIGHT.
Many long-time KPOP fans would recognize them as BEAST. Before becoming Highlight, the group debuted under Cube Entertainment in 2009 as Beast. They originally have six members: Doojoon, Junhyung, Yoseob, Gikwang, Dongwoon, and Hyunseung. In 2016, right before the group’s contract would end, Hyunseung decided to withdraw from Beast and pursue a solo career. The remaining five members decided not to renew their contract with Cube and established their own company called Around Us Entertainment and have themselves re-debuted as a 5-member group under the name Highlight.
As Highlight, the group has released three albums with their first one released as their debut in 2017 entitled “Can You Feel It?”. The group isn’t that very active currently as the members are serving their military enlistment. I think the group will have a grand comeback once everyone has served the military. Let us get to know the guys now!
Highlight Members’ Profiles
Doojoon was born in Goyang, South Korea and has an older sister named Yoon Doori. Doojoon is known to be very emotional and he cries over small things. He used to be a trainee in JYP and was in the running to become a member of 2AM or 2PM but he got eliminated. When they debuted as Beast, my eyes went directly to Doojoon. He has a very manly aura with chiseled facial features. Not to mention is sharp and sexy eyes. To say the least, he was my first bias.
Junhyung is a city guy. He was born in Seoul and attended Dongshin University in college. He’s one of those performers with a “two face”. He is very charismatic and strong onstage when he raps but he’s a soft and cute mammal offstage. One funny thing that he shared in one show is that during his activities as an idol, he did not come home for a long time that even his own dog barked at him and thought he was a stranger. If I could, I would marry this guy. He’s actually rich. Among all the KPOP idols, he ranks second in terms of earnings through song royalties just behind G-Dragon.
Like Junhyung, Yoseob was also born in Seoul. His family and friends tease him that he is an old soul because he takes red ginseng capsules that elders normally use. In reality, he is just very conscious of his health. He made a solo debut back then and released a song called “Caffeine”. That song is one of my favorite KPOP songs of all time. He also released a collaboration with B.A.P.’s Bang Yongguk called “I Remember” which is also another favorite song of mine. Yoseob has one of the most amazing voices in KPOP. His singing style is unique but still sweet to the ears.
Gikwang was born in Naje, South Jeolla Province and has a younger brother named Hyekwang. Not many fans know this but he had a bad case of eye problems that he had to wear glasses. However, after a LASIK surgery, his eye problems were corrected and he did not need glasses anymore. Around the time that Beast is debuting, he had the honor of opening the Korean showcase of Lady Gaga. Gikwang is my personal bias. I did not really pay a lot of attention to him during their earlier years. The thing that made me notice him is when he appeared in a sci-fi drama called Circle. His acting was so good that I was going back to every single music video they released just to watch him. Since then, I was a fan of Gikwang not only as a singer and a dancer but also as an actor.
Dongwoon is from Busan. I don’t know what it is about idols and Busan but the Korean media thinks that idols who are from Busan are extremely talented. I guess it’s true because Dongwoon is very fluent in three languages: English, Chinese, and Korean. Aside from that, he also knows how to play musical instruments such as the piano, violin, and the electric flute. He was also a former JYP trainee before moving to Cube. His taste in women is also a little unique. Most guys would say that they like girls who can do a lot of aegyo but Dongwoon prefers girls who are naturally cute and those who do not need an effort to become cute.
Best of Highlight
The group has been in the industry for a very long time because technically, they really debuted way back in 2009 but only on a different name. Sometimes, I do listen to the songs they released as Highlight and my most favorite one so far is their debut single “Plz Don’t Be Sad”. It’s a very upbeat song and hearing it would bring a lot of positive energy in the atmosphere. However, most of the songs that I love about the group is from when they were still promoting as Beast. Up until today, I could still sing one of their hit singles called “I Like You The Best” in perfect lyrics. It was part of the album “Lights Go On Again” released in November 2010.
While Highlight may not be currently active, I know that the group has a lot of plans in the future for their fans. They just really need to finish doing some mandatory things such as the military enlistment but after that, I’m sure that the group will continue to explore their music and provide a lot of new and exciting song to their fans.
