One of the most prominent talent agencies in the KPOP industry is YG Entertainment. They house some of the most successful KPOP artists like Big Bang, 2NE1, Winner, Lee Hi, and BlackPink. In this article, we will be talking about one of the most talented artists in YG who has taken the world by storm ever since their debut: iKON.
iKON was officially formed in 2015 as a result of a survival reality show produced by YG. However, that isn’t the first that the members of the group appeared on TV. Prior to “MIX & MATCH”, the show that gave birth to iKON, the members appeared the previous year in the show “WIN” where they were pitted against another training team. Unfortunately, their team lost and the winning team would then be called Winner.
A year later, YG decided to give the boys another shot by producing “MIX & MATCH” where the losing members from “WIN” came back and competed against new trainees. “MIX & MATCH” was different from “WIN” because instead of the whole team competing, it was more of an individual competition where each of the trainees will work hard to become a member of the 7-member boy group that YG was planning to debut.
In the end, B.I, Bobby, Jay, Ju-ne, Song, DK, and Chan were chosen as the final members. With that, let us get to know the members one by one.
iKON Members’ Profile
B.I [Kim Hanbin]
B.I has a special place in my heart. I was already rooting for him ever since I watched “WIN”. He’s the kind of person who knows how to balance work and play. When it is time to work for their performance, B.I shows almost no mercy.
He’d work so hard until his team has perfected the performance. But, when they are resting, he’s a really playful person. He would play around his Mickey Mouse toys. This is why B.I is my bias. He’s responsible enough to carry a team but he also knows when to take a break.
Another thing that I admire about B.I is that he’s a really talented composer. He has composed popular songs such as Winner’s “Empty”, BlackPink’s “Whistle”, and was a contributor to Epik High’s “Born Hater”.
Jay [Kim Jinhwan]
Jay appeared in WIN alongside B.I and that was when he started gaining recognition for his unique singing style. Because of the long time that they spent together as trainees, he is really close with fellow members B.I and Bobby. Jay didn’t use to go by his current name.
During the early days of iKON, he went by his real name Jinhwan. Jinhwan is the shortest member in the group in terms of height, this is why the fellow members tease him a lot. When they debuted, there was a rumor that circulated that Jay and AOA’s Jimin used to have a past relationship.
I don’t really understand why fans and even talent agencies forbid their artists to date. I believe that agencies should only intervene in an idol’s love life when they are not really mature enough for one.
But, older idols are more responsible and I think it’s unfair that they are dictated when it comes to their personal happiness. If Jay used to date Jimin, then there really is nothing wrong with that.
Song [Song Yunhyeong]
Like most of the members of the group, Song was not really Song during the start of their career. He used to be called Yunhyeong and it wasn’t until their recent comeback that he decided to change his stage name.
One particular memory I could remember with Song is his extreme obsession with a lip balm brand. Actually, when that scene about him being so happy receiving tons of lip balm broadcasted, fans started to flock the stores to buy the same thing that Song uses.
Talk about being an influencer, eh? According to an interview, he is quite the perfectionist. He likes to plan things really carefully and he gets easily upset when things are not going his way.
Bobby [Kim Jiwon]
When it comes to rapping, Bobby does not get behind some of the best rappers in his generation. He and B.I appeared in the rap competition called “Show Me The Money” for its third season.
Bobby is also quite the naughty type. In most of the video clips of him, he is either wearing sleeveless tops or he would go completely topless. Well, Bobby has a really ripped body. His abs are so sexy, to be honest. Many fans, including myself, are always looking forward to the next time he takes his shirt off.
The thing about Bobby is that he is very opposite to how he projects himself onstage. He is rather shy. In one of the appearances he had in the hit variety show “Running Man”, I couldn’t help but notice how silent and shy he is. It was a little cute, though.
But, I wish he would learn how to be more proactive, especially now that iKON is gaining a lot of popularity in the industry.
DK [Kim Donghyuk]
Do not confuse him with DK from Seventeen. While they share the same stage name, they have really different charms. He is the second member of the group next to Bobby who likes to take his shirt off a lot both on and off screen.
Not many fans know this but he actually won JYP’s Trainee Search in March 2012. But, he decided to go with YG when the agency recruited him in November 2012.
Ju-ne [Koo Junhoe]
Ju-ne is another member of the group who recently had their stage name changed. He used to be called Junhoe but he shortened it to Ju-ne. His vocal quality is the opposite that of Jay’s. His is thicker and fuller.
This is why he is considered as one of the best singers in his generation. For long time KPOP fans, you might have recognized him when he appeared on the first season of Kpop Star.
Chan [Jung Chanwoo]
Chan is the youngest member of the group and he is the only one who did not appear in WIN as part of Team B. I don’t know if you can recognize him but prior to his stint in YG, he actually appeared in a lot of famous Korean dramas as a child actor.
He played the younger version of the characters played by Lee Minho in “Boys Over Flowers” and “The Heirs”. He also appeared in TVXQ’s MV “Balloon” without his two front teeth.
Surprisingly, most of the child actors he was friends with back then also ended up as idols today like Astro’s Moonbin who is one of his closest friends.
More about iKON
Compared to idol groups who debuted at the same time as iKON, the group did not really release many songs so far. The debuted with “My Type” and “Rhythm Ta” and won recognition. But then, they were inactive for quite a while until they came back.
Their comeback would now be one of Korea’s most loved one. Their song “Love Scenario” was so sensational that a kindergarten school in Korea banned the song from being played in their school because all the kids did was sing the song.
I personally love the song, too. It was a soft pop song and I just couldn’t help but bob my head to its rhythm. The lyrics are also so relatable and this is one thing that makes a lot of people love it.
The future holds a lot of things for the groups. I just hope that iKON members will not be caught up in a lot of scandals. I’m sorry, but honestly, YG artists are quite notorious for being involved in scandals here and there.
iKON has so much talent and I look forward to more songs from them. They are capable of producing their own songs so it looks like it won’t be long before we will see more of this iconic group!
