MBLAQ Ultimate Fan Guide

While it is a given fact in KPOP that idol groups do not really last forever, you will not be able to take away the longing of the fans when their favorite group takes a break or disbands altogether. One of the KPOP groups that I’m sure everyone misses is MBLAQ.

MBLAQ is a South Korean boy band created by the famous artist, Rain, under J.Tune Camp. The group debuted on October 15, 2009 originally with five members: Seungho, G.O, Mir, Lee Joon, and Thunder. Their first public performance was during Rain’s Legend of Rainism concert.

MBLAQ was first announced in public on September 21, 2009 when they appeared in Nylon magazine. On October 12, 2009, the group started release teasers for their debut single “Oh Yeah”. Two days later, their music video and single album called “Just BLAQ” was released. And then a day after that, they appeared on Rain’s concert performing songs from their first album. At the same time, the group made their broadcast debut on MNet’s M! Countdown.

In December of that same year, the group had their Japan debut. This was followed by a documentary that showed their whole stay in Japan. By the end of December, the group started promoting their follow-up song “G.O.O.D Luv”.

On May 17,2010, the group released another single album called “Y” with the carrier single of the same name. The song was written, composed, produced, and choreographed by Rain himself. The music video for this song was released on the same day during midnight. This song has brought the group their first music show win on M! Countdown. They were also voted as the Best Rookie Group for the first half of 2010 through a poll by Bugs, getting almost half of all the votes on the poll.

Personally, “Y” is my favorite song of MBLAQ. This was around the time that I became a KPOP fan and while watching my favorite groups on different music shows, it was hard to miss MBLAQ’s performance of the song. It’s a very catchy song with a very memorable hook. Furthermore, the choreography of the song was very well-executed. Another MBLAQ song that I like is “This Is War”. I haven’t really followed MBLAQ that much so I was not very updated with their release. While watching a music show, I was surprised to see them performing with this song. Again, I was digging the song’s strong and aggressive style and vocals. It’s a song that I would play every time I’m so angry at someone and I can’t physically harm that person. Just kidding, I would never physically harm a person (maybe only in my thoughts).

On December 16, 2014, the group made an important announcement. Their contracts with J.Tune Camp has expired and two members, Joon and Thunder, has decided not to renew. Instead, they went on to focus on doing individual activities: Joon on his acting career and Thunder with his study of music. Nothing is finally confirmed about the group’s future activities. It was said that Joon and Thunder will not be promoting with the group for now and MBLAQ will continue as a trio with Seungho, G.O, and Mir as members.

Name: Yang Seungho

Birthday: October 16, 1987

Position: Leader, Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist

Out of all the members of MBLAQ, Seungho is the only member that uses his real name. Actually, Seungho was the original “Mir”. He was supposed to use that stage name but decided otherwise and let another member use it. Unlike his strong features, Seungho has one of the sweetest voice I’ve heard. I think his personal asset is his lips. It’s very luscious and he has this slit at the bottom of his lips that makes his appearance sexier. And, I think he knows it too because he likes flaunting it by licking his lips often. During his pre-debut days, he earns money by teaching piano lessons and apparatus gymnastics. Talk about hard work!

Name: Jung Byunghee

Birthday: November 6, 1987

Position: Main Vocalist

Before being part of MBLAQ, G.O is quite the ladies’ man. He said that he had 20 girlfriends so far! MBLAQ is not really G.O’s first group. Prior to joining the group, he was in a co-ed R&B band called TY KEY. However, the company went bankrupt and he went to court to end his contract. It’s a good thing he decided to pursue his dreams of becoming an artist because we would not have a G.O to love now! The members also said that G.O is very particular with cleanliness. He would even spend an hour taking a bath!

Name: Bang Cheolyong

Birthday: March 10, 1991

Position: Main Rapper, Vocalist, Maknae

While Mir is the main rapper of the group, the fact that he is the youngest makes the other members treat him like a cute puppy. This is why he got the nickname “Bangaji”, a combination of his last name and the Korean term for puppy “gangaji”. Mir also loves his fans so much and said that he should use or wear everything that his fans give him because they used their savings to buy the gifts for him. If that isn’t the sweetest thing in the world, I don’t know what is.

Former Members

Name: Lee Changsun

Birthday: February 7, 1988

Position: Main Dancer, Vocalist, Face of the Group

We just got to admit that Joon is the group’s most popular member. He’s very funny, which is why he often appears in variety shows. He has one of the sexiest abs in the industry and he loves to flaunt it during their concerts. He’s also a very talented actor and has acted in several popular Korean dramas.

Name: Park Sanghyun

Birthday: October 7, 1990

Position: Lead Rapper, Lead Dancer, Vocalist, Visual

Many people know Thunder as 2NE1’s Sandara Park’s younger brother. This is why when Sandara Park had a career in the Philippines as an entertainer, Thunder used to live in the country too. When he came to Korea, he joined J.Tune and MBLAQ very late and only has a few days to catch up before debuting. And, for someone who did not have very proper training, Thunder has one of the best stage presence I’ve ever seen.
