A lot has happened in the KPOP industry ever since it first emerged in the early 90’s. Today, this genre of music is slowly gaining attention worldwide, thanks to a handful of talented KPOP artists who paved the way for the entire industry to be known globally.
This has led to companies debuting groups in hopes that they may become known worldwide. And, one group that has successfully done that is Starship Entertainment’s MONSTA X.
MONSTA X is a product of Starship’s survival reality show entitled No.Mercy. In the show, 13 trainees were pitted against each other in different performance missions until seven of them were chosen to be part of the final debut line-up. Shownu, Wonho, Minhyuk, Kihyun, Hyungwon, Jooheon, and I.M were chosen to be part of the final line-up.
MonstaX Member Profile
I didn’t really pay too much attention to Shownu. He used to be very silent. I would not contest his leadership skills because he actually did a very good job at keeping the members aligned. But, he was just too timid and shy that it was easy for me to look past him. And by some sort of a miracle, Shownu suddenly started being more talkative.
He appeared in variety shows alone and without the members. Being on shows alone must have forced him to rely on himself and work harder to actually become more involved. Lately, Monbebes (the name of the group’s fandom) have been getting content from the group’s official accounts with Shownu spearheading conversations. And, you could say that I am one of those who got smitten by his change.
Wonho has always been the group’s official “naked front”. I don’t know what goes on in his head that he loves to rip off his clothes every chance he gets. I remember the time when Monsta X was invited to perform at Dream Concert. They weren’t even a year old back then.
They just debuted and I clearly remember the shock that everyone got when Wonho had his solo choreography and tore off his clothes at the end. KPOP fans rarely see their idols go full topless in performances, let alone rookies.
Well, he did have something to show off quite frankly. In social media, he’s famous for sharing photos of him working out at the gym. He is very open about taking good care of his body. And, I think there is nothing wrong with that. If you have it, you flaunt it!
Out of all the members, Wonho is the one with the least solo activities. He hasn’t appeared in any variety show alone yet. This might be because there are only three things that he loves the most: his fellow members, Monbebes, and ramen.
Minhyuk is not my bias but I really like him. Out of all the members, his personality is the closest to mine. He’s quirky and playful; thus, earning him the nickname “Minmongie” or “Minhyuk puppy”. He may sometimes come off as annoying because he just can’t shut up. He has always been so notorious for spoiling the group’s comeback preparations because of his tactlessness.
Many fan accounts say that Minhyuk has one of those “shocking visual” features. I didn’t know what that really meant until I was able to see him up close during a fan meeting I attended to. I was imagining he’d have the same look as he had onscreen but when I went up and did a hi-touch, he really was different.
He is stunning. He has a very sculpted jawline, thin but full lips, and sultry eyes. But nope, that wasn’t enough for me to change lanes. I’m pretty loyal to a bias when I decide to have one.
If you decide to be a KPOP fan, be ready to be subjected for a difficult time in choosing a bias. During No.Mercy, I didn’t really feel even the slightest bit of attraction to this guy as he appeared to be so snobbish and arrogant. But sometimes, we just are really wrong with our first impressions. He’s actually a fine man with a very good voice to die for.
I started liking him when it was revealed that he’s the one that cleans their dorms and he is the one who is responsible for keeping the order and cleanliness among the members. Seriously, where else can you find such a responsible man like that nowadays?
Kihyun was always teased for his height. He was rather in the shorter side of things and back then, he was quite chubby. There was even a time when he drew contour lines all over his torso just so he could appear to have abs while dancing to “Hero”. Those contour lines are long gone now and were replaced with real hard abs. This is another thing that added to my dilemma. Because of him, I’m having a hard time maintaining my virtual relationship with my bias.
Honestly, Hyungwon is my least favorite member. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying I don’t like him. I just have this ranking and he happens to be at the last spot. Hyungwon has a face that could someday launch a thousand ships. He has recently found his passion for DJ-ing. But, he has this weirdness that I can’t quite make out. He’s funny at times but I still haven’t found that one thing that would make me look for him every day.
I always like to call Jooheon as the “Man with Two Faces”. I think many Monbebes can agree that he’s just the cutest fluffball offstage and he becomes a scary monster when he performs onstage.
My affection for Jooheon is more of like a brotherly kind. If I would imagine a day with him, it would seem like I won’t have any dull moments because he’s always ready to lighten up the mood.
And now, we have the youngest member or the “maknae”. Ladies and gentlemen, my one and only bias. I have always had eyes on I.M ever since he should up in the middle of No.Mercy. He entered the contest halfway, replacing a few previously eliminated members. This has caused a negative reaction from the remaining trainees because they felt like it was unfair. This is the very reason why I found him interesting.
I have this weird attraction to underdogs. Every time I watch a competition or even a sports event, I always find myself rooting for the underdog. This is exactly what happened with I.M. Everyone was hating on him for being privileged and all. Thankfully, he shut everyone up when he showed he can legit rap.
Since then, I have already decided that I.M would be my bias. He grew up in a different environment as his family lived abroad for a few years and that made him one of the most interesting personalities in the KPOP industry.
Trespass – Beautiful
The group debuted in 2015 with their first mini-album called “Trespass” that carried a title track of the same name. Being in the same agency as Sistar, they gained attention, especially in digital sales. However, the coveted “first win” was still a long way to go at that time as they promoted alongside bigger artists in the industry.
Monsta X then released their second mini-album “Rush” that also has the same name for their title track. After the song “Rush” was promoted, they immediately made a follow-up promotion for another track in the album called “Hero” and released a different version on a digital repackage.
After that, they started an album series called “The Clan”. It started with the first album in the series called “Lost” with “All In” as the title track. It was followed by the second album called “Guilty” with “Fighter” as the title track. And it culminated with the group’s first full-length album called “The Clan Pt. 2.5: The Final Chapter” carrying the title track “Beautiful”.
At this point, everyone, including myself, is hungry for a win. “Beautiful” is my personal favorite title track even until now. The style of the song really defined who Monsta X really is: a union of hip-hop and EDM with class. Sadly, they were a little short and failed to win a trophy.
The first win…And the ones that followed
Even though the group still hasn’t won any awards in local music shows, they still continued releasing new music. It wasn’t about the awards anymore. It was already about making Monbebes happy. So, in November 2017, they released another mini-album entitled “The Code”. And, as if by some movie-like script, Monsta X finally won their first ever music show award for the track “Dramarama”.
It was the most emotional moment for both the group and for the fans. Everyone was so overwhelmed that all we could do was cry. There was a famous video clip of Monsta X that involved an interview of them after the show aired and up until the interview ended, no one stopped crying. This showed how much they have been really craving for an award.
Won another award
Monsta X won another award after releasing another mini album called “The Connect: Dejavu” in the first quarter of 2018. It carried the song “Jealousy” and like “Beautiful”, it showed both the charisma and sexiness of the group with the sultry vocals and sensual choreography.
Finally, the group made another achievement by winning in four different music shows for their latest single “Shoot Out” from their second and latest full album “Take.1: Are You There?”
Considering all the achievements that Monsta X has garnered so far, there is no denying that they are slowly gaining recognition not just in Korea but in the whole world. They were recently featured in a documentary entitled “When You Call My Name” where they performed a collaboration with Gallant, the other globally-renowned artist featured in the film.
They were also invited as a performer for iHeartRadio’s annual event and became the first KPOP act to perform in the Jingle Ball.
There is still a lot more to come in the future for Monsta X and I am already excited to tread along the flowery path with them. Monsta X will always have a special place in my heart as I have known them for being more than an artist. They made sure that Monbebes get to know them in the deepest way possible that an idol-fan relationship can get. And for that, I am thankful.
