Super Junior Ultimate Fan Guide

I won’t accept any argument when I say that every KPOP fan knows who Super Junior is. I mean, come on, who honestly doesn’t know about them? New fans? Then, these young kids should start getting to know the forefathers (yes, because they are honestly old) of KPOP. Super Junior has left such a legacy that young idols today are looking up to them as an inspiration.

The story I have with Super Junior is quite interesting. When I first knew about Super Junior, I didn’t really like them. Quite honestly, I made the promise that I won’t ever listen to them again. You see, the first video clip that I watched of them was a clip from their movie called “Attack on the Pin-Up Boys”. It was Yesung performing a metal rock song and I have a personal distaste of metal rock. It’s just so noisy and annoying. If you like it, then good. Just don’t push it on me because I like something else.

Anyway, I had a bad impression of the group because of that video. My friend actually hated me and fought with me because I was saying insulting things about them. My dislike of the group grew when I saw their MV for “Happiness”. They were just so… gay. The MV was just so colorful and the boys’ expression was so over-the-top. It’s not that I don’t like gayness. I just felt like that was a little over the line. (Just a side note, my friend fought with me again and this time, we weren’t speaking for almost three months).

But then, everything completely changed when I saw the music video for their song “Sorry, Sorry” when they released it. I had to go back to my friend and swallow my pride and ask her to help me get to know each and every member of the group because, to say the least, I was smitten. “Sorry, Sorry” would then be the group’s global breakthrough and a personal favorite of mine. But, do not mistake it for being my one and only favorite song. Super Junior has been in the industry for more than a decade and they already have hundreds of songs and I have other favorite songs such as “RESET”, “This Is Love”, and “A-Cha”.

If you are a new fan, do not make the same mistake that I did. Super Junior is extremely talented. You can start with this article to get to know each of the members a little.

Name: Park Jungsoo

Birthday: July 1, 1983

Position: Leader, Vocalist, Rapper

Leeteuk is the group’s leader and one of the eldest members of the group. He is also part of two sub-units of Super Junior: Super Junior-T and Super Junior-Happy. Leeteuk is best known for his hosting skills. When Super Junior was inactive for a long time, he has been an MC in a lot of variety, game, and contest shows. He hosted a lot that he jokes about it even with the group’s reality shows.

Name: Kim Heechul

Birthday: July 10, 1983

Position: Vocalist, Rapper

Heechul might just be the group’s most eccentric member. He is known for his weird acts and unique preferences. In 2006, he got in a car accident after attending the funeral of Donghae’s father. His injury was quite bad that he had to undergo surgery and metal rods need to be attached in his knees to help recovery. This is the main reason why he does not dance for the whole songs of the group because he still feels pain and discomfort.

Name: Kim Jonghoon

Birthday: August 24, 1984

Position: Main Vocalist

Yesung is the most silent member of the group. It’s not that he is shy but the other members like to play with him and cut him off every time he tries to speak. Although the members tease him a lot, he admits that he still feels slight attachments to some of the members from time to time.

Name: Kim Youngwoon

Birthday: January 17, 1985

Position: Vocalist

Kangin is on the plus-size side of the group. His name roughly translates to “strong benevolence”, something that quite reflects who he really is: a strong but nice person. Kangin is currently taking a hiatus from Super Junior activities as he was involved in two DUI cases and the talent agency decided to have him rest in order to reflect on his actions.

Name: Shin Donghee

Birthday: September 28, 1985

Position: Lead Rapper, Lead Dancer

Shindong has avery interesting personality. I didn’t want to say this but it has gone noticeable that Koreans have their own standard of beauty. Shindong was a big guy but that didn’t stop him from debuting with the group. In the end, Shindong is one of the most well-liked members of the group because of his humor.

Name: Lee Sungmin

Birthday: January 1, 1986

Position: Lead Vocalist, Lead Dancer

Sungmin is best known for his obsession with the color pink. And, it looks like he is also quite the romantic type. So far, he is the first and only member of the group that got married. His wife is the talented musical actress Kim Saeun. While he has already served his mandatory military service, Sungmin did not participate with the latest promotions of Super Junior because he wanted to focus on his married life for the meantime.

Name: Lee Hyukjae

Birthday: April 4, 1986

Position: Main Rapper, Vocalist, Main Dancer

Eunhyuk is the official dancer of the group. Just recently, he was a mentor of the Performance Team in the recently concluded survival reality show “Under 19”. Once, he was involved in a scandal with IU when she accidentally posted a photo of them together with IU wearing pajamas and Eunhyuk was shirtless. Their agencies denied the rumor and Eunhyuk could only laugh when the issue is brought up in his interviews.

Name: Choi Siwon

Birthday: April 7, 1986

Position: Vocalist, Visual

Siwon has the best abs in the group. He is called the visual for a reason. However, his body isn’t the only thing that Siwon should be proud of. He has already appeared in countless Korean dramas like “Athena”, “Poseidon”, She Was Pretty”, and “Revolutionary Love”.

Name: Lee Donghae

Birthday: October 15, 1986

Position: Lead Vocalist, Lead Dancer, Rapper

I wouldn’t say anything much about Donghae except that he is my bias. And, I tend to be selfish with my biases at times. Just kidding. Donghae has never appeared in a lot of variety shows alone before. It was only recently that he started discovering his variety skills. This is why even if he isn’t the youngest, he is called the “variety baby” because he has the least experience. He is also known for easily crying. He easily gets emotional even with the littlest things. He is also best known for his catchphrase “Okay, we can!” from their reality show “SJ Full House”. I mean, who wouldn’t have him as a bias after all that?

Name: Kim Ryeowook

Birthday: June 21, 1987

Position: Main Vocalist

Ryeowook was originally the group’s maknae before Kyuhyun was added to the group. Ryeowook has one of the most unique voices in the industry. Even now that he is older, he still has a cute drinking habit. He would go around saying “I love you” repeatedly.

Name: Cho Kyuhyun

Birthday: February 3, 1988

Position: Main Vocalist, Maknae

Kyuhyun is the current maknae of the group. In 2007, he and some other members of the group were in a car accident. All the others had minor injuries and only needed a few stitches while his condition was quite serious. He was in full bedrest and was unable to participate with Super Junior activities for a while. Kyuhyun is currently serving his mandatory military service and he is the last one of the group to do this. This means that when he gets out in February 2019, everyone in the group is already free from their duties and fans will fully enjoy new music that the group will release in the future.
