If there’s one interesting group that debuted in the KPOP industry in the more recent generation, it would be TWICE.
TWICE is a South Korean girl group under JYP Entertainment and was formed through a reality survival show entitled “SIXTEEN”. They made their debut on October 20, 2015, with the song “Like OOH-AHH” under their first EP, “The Story Begins”. The group is composed of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. KPOP fans will have heard of Twice at least once. But, even the fans may not know some things about the group. Before we look into the surprising facts about TWICE, let us get to know the members one by one first.
TWICE Member’s Profile
Jihyo [Park Jihyo]
Jihyo was born in Guri, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea under the name Park Jisoo. However, even before SIXTEEN started, she changed and legalized her name to Park Jihyo. While she may not be the eldest member of the group, the members had anonymous voting and she was declared the leader. KPOP groups normally have their eldest member as the leader. But, I think the members agreed to have Jihyo as the leader because she showed the most promising leadership skills regardless of her young age.
Nayeon’s journey to become an idol was really a shot to the moon. When she was still a kid, she joined a contest for child models and that’s when JYP first saw her. However, her mom did not want her to be training at such a young age. Ten years later, she snuck out and secretly auditioned on a JYP open audition and successfully passed. Since then, she was training under JYP and was actually part of a girl group that JYP was grooming for a debut. The group was called “6MIX” but unfortunately, the group disbanded even before they made their debut. Thankfully, she waited a few more years and successfully made it to the cut by the end of SIXTEEN.
Jeongyeon [Yoo Kyungwan]
Jeongyeon’s original name was Yoo Kyungwan but she convinced her parents to change it when she was in third grade because she did not like that she was teased for her name sounding like that of a boy’s. Jeongyeon did not originally pass the JYP audition. However, she tried again for JYP’s 6th Open Audition held on March 1, 2010, and successfully passed. Not only that, she was actually accepted at SM on the very same day she auditioned for JYP. Ultimately, she chose to train under JYP and it looks like she made the right decision!
Momo [Hirai Momo]
Unlike many idols, Momo did not enter JYP through an audition by herself. JYP actually saw a dance video of her and her older sister and decided to invite her for an audition. She made it to the cut and became a trainee. Momo was actually eliminated from the survival show “SIXTEEN” during the sixth episode. But, ultimately JYP decided to add her because of her exceptional dance skills.
Like Momo, Sana was also invited for an audition when an employee from JYP chanced upon her while she was shopping with her friends. She then successfully passed the audition and became a trainee. In primary school, she learned how to do calligraphy and it has become her specialty since then. Prior to becoming a member of Twice, she already appeared in other JYP artists’ music videos such as GOT7’s “A” and Junho’s “Feel”.
Mina [Myoui Mina]
Mina was born in San Antonio, Texas but moved to Kobe, Japan when she was still a baby. It looks like JYP has a thing for Japanese girls as she was also cast and invited to audition for JYP while she was out shopping with her mom. Among all Twice members, she had the shortest training period before being part of the group. Her background in dancing is ballet and she learned it for 11 years.
Dahyun is also another member who got scouted by JYP. In a youth dance festival when she was still in middle school, she performed a solo and that’s where JYP saw her. She officially became a trainee in 2012. As a matter of fact, she simultaneously auditioned for SM, JYP, and YG and got accepted by the big three companies. Can you imagine if she debuted with either SM or YG? I couldn’t. She’s actually my bias in the group because I saw her quirky and funny side during her short stint in Weekly Idol. She wouldn’t have had that image if she chose SM or YG.
Chaeyoung is the group’s mood maker. Sometimes, she gets teased by her members because of her short height. Chaeyoung is living a rather healthy lifestyle and she likes to eat a lot of veggies and she stays away from sweets as much as possible. She is also famous for her exceptional impression skills as she can realistically imitate the sound of a quacking duck or the sound of a window being wiped.
Tzuyu was cast by JYP in 2012 when someone saw her at the MUSE Performing Arts Workshop. For a Taiwanese, she has a darker skin tone, earning her the nickname “Chocolate”. She is close to BlackPink’s Rose and CLC’s Elkie.
Surprising Facts About Twice
As I’ve said, Twice may be a very popular group but there are some things that not a lot of people know about them. Let’s see if you know these fun little facts.
TWICE originally should be a 7-member girl group
At the beginning of SIXTEEN, JYP announced that he would be choosing seven girls at the end of the show to be part of a girl group he would be debuting. However, JYP personally made the decision to add two new members: Momo and Tzuyu. He decided to add Momo because she can contribute to the value of the group in terms of dancing skills. Tzuyu was also added because of her extreme popularity and JYP would not want to waste it.
TWICE have a few most disliked KPOP videos on YouTube
Extreme popularity comes with a little bit of negativity. While they are considered as one of the industry’s most popular girl group today, they actually have some of the most disliked videos on YouTube. “Dance the Night Away” even got 124,000 dislikes! I personally don’t understand why. “Dance the Night Away” was the group’s most promising song to date. Prior to this single, I wasn’t really a fan of their songs that much because they sounded like any other girl group. But when they released this single, it was like JYP decided to shift things completely around. The song has the best vocals that the group ever did and I think it was one of the most difficult choreographies that a girl group can do. Well, haters are just going to hate and Twice will stay popular!
TWICE’s popularity goes beyond KPOP
Did you know that some schools actually include TWICE on their test items? A netizen once posted a photo of a test item featuring the group’s song “TT” and it also included a picture of Dahyun wearing a bunny costume from the MV! In Taiwan, Tzuyu was so popular that she became a subject for a reading comprehension test. Not only that, but a group of app developers was also so inspired by Tzuyu’s skateboarding skills that they created a game around her!
We all have to admit that TWICE’s popularity is unrivaled. Some KPOP fans may argue that they are not as talented as other girl groups out there but they have the charm that a lot of people like. I just wish that TWICE experiments more with their music. There is so much more to discover when it comes to their talent and who knows, they might just be renowned for a new genre? So people, don’t think twice about Twice. You will surely love them and you will surely find them adorable!
