If there is one thing in KPOP that fans of different groups are very proud of, it’s how their favorite idols carry a concept. Unfortunately, not every idol group who comes back with a new song found success in the concept they were trying to do. Some groups just felt like they are too old or too young for a concept. Some are just too soft or too hard for it. But, there is one group that perfectly nails every concept they do: VIXX.
VIXX is a six-member boy band formed under Jellyfish Entertainment. They are composed of six very tall guys namely N, Leo, Ken, Ravi, Hongbin, and Hyuk. We’ll discuss some of the best concepts that the group ever did (well, at least according to me). But first, let’s get to know each member.
Name: Cha Hakyeon
Birthday: June 30, 1990
Position: Leader, Main Dancer, Lead Vocalist, Center
N has always been the “mother” of the group. He’s neat and clean and he keeps everyone organized. Aside from being an idol, N has also acted in a few Korean dramas. Some of his most notable performances are in “Hotel King”, “Sassy Go Go”, and “Familiar Wife”.
Name: Jung Taekwoon
Birthday: November 10, 1990
Position: Main Vocalist
Every Starlight (VIXX’s fandom name) knows how shy and reserved Leo is during their early days. But now, he’s more comfortable and he’s showing his fun side whenever he appears in variety shows. Many fans, like me, like this because we know that Leo is full of fun amidst the cool and icy image he portrays on stage. Leo is also a frequent actor in musicals. He was a part of “Full House”, “Mata Hari”, “The Last Kiss”, and “Elizabeth”.
Name: Lee Jaehwan
Birthday: April 6, 1992
Position: Main Vocalist
Ken is the official chatterbox of the group. He is so talkative that the other members would not let him talk whenever he gets the chance to. But his sense of humor aside, Ken has a really good voice. That is the primary reason why he is my bias. The first time I heard him sing a ballad, I just instantly fell in love. The most memorable performance for me was when he did a duet in a show called “Duet Song Festival” singing the classic song “It’s Only in My World”. You should check that out too!
Name: Kim Wonshik
Birthday: February 15, 1993
Position: Main Rapper, Lead Dancer, Vocalist
If not for his charismatic voice, Ravi would be known as the member who always takes off his clothes. He’s got the body, though. I just wish he would lessen those topless moments because it makes the fans weak. Anyway, Ravi is really talented. He just doesn’t rap. He writes his own lyrics and produces his own songs. He has been successful with his self-produced promotions so far.
Name: Lee Hongbin
Birthday: September 29, 1993
Position: Lead Rapper, Vocalist, Visual, Face of the Group
Hongbin is undoubtedly the group’s visual. However, the members like to tease him that even if he has a handsome face, his legs are short. Like N, Hongbin has also tried acting. He was in “Glorious Day”, “Moorim School”, and “Witch’s Love”. He is known to be very close to B1A4’s Gongchan and they actually filmed a date day in a show called “Celebrity Bromance”.
Name: Han Sanghyuk
Birthday: July 5, 1995
Position: Main Dancer, Vocalist, Maknae
No matter how tall Hyuk gets, he will always be a baby to the members and to the fans. When he is asked to do aegyo, he perfectly does it and while everyone cringes, they all love it and say how cute Hyuk is.
VIXX’s BEST CONCEPTS
As promised, here is a list of some of the best concepts that VIXX did throughout their career. Take note that this is just my personal opinion. If you want to become a fan and you have watched their music videos, you may have a different opinion. But, no matter what our opinions are, the only thing that is for sure is that VIXX is the king of concepts.
#4 – Error
VIXX is known to take love stories to a whole new level. “Error” is one perfect example of that. The story in the music video is about a man and a woman’s tragic love set in the future. The woman died and the man revived her by installing robot pieces. However, their second chance at love was short-lived as they both met a tragic end when the authorities caught up with what they did. Hongbin did really well with his acting here. He was able to draw the audience to focus on the story and be amazed by the choreography.
#3 – Chained Up
Don’t judge me because I know that each one of us has our own fantasies. “Chained Up” perfectly explored the sexier and more elegant side of the group. As the title suggests, the music video was filled with chains, whips, and bondages. Overall, the song and the choreography just went well with each other. Needless to say, VIXX knew what BDSM is and I was just tied up in chains when they released this song.
#2 – Voodoo Doll
This is my other favorite song aside from the one I will be mentioning below. The whole concept is just perfectly dark and creepy. It’s about a girl who uses dark magic like voodoo dolls to claim and control guys that she likes. Plus, the music video was so dark and explicit that it had to be edited to make it safe for broadcast. Soon, they released the R-rated version for the matured audience and when I watched it, it just added to the many reasons why I like this song.
#1 – Shangri-La
This is my top favorite song of VIXX of all time. It was unlike any other concept that they did. “Shangri-La” explored more of the East Asian mythology concept but with a modern twist. The Korean title of the song translates to “Peach Blossom Spring” and the group has perfectly woven it to flowers, nature, and hand fans. The choreography was also very perfect because of its fluid and beautiful movements inspired by East Asian traditional dances.
